The original version of this project was made with Bella Solids and some tonals from assorted Moda designers. For this remix, we're showing you how it looks in Thatched by Robin Pickens, AND in a different colorway for the flowers! Check out the other mock ups I have to share at the end of this post, too.
Note: This pattern includes a chart with each block component and number needed that will be helpful as there are several units and color combinations of each unit to make this work.
These blocks are fairly small, so I want to share some tips with you for success in sewing these small units.
First, be sure to draw those diagonal lines! You may be tempted to "wing it" on these small pieces, but I promise it is worth the time to be sure you are marking a straight line along the diagonal.
Second, sew right next to the line. And then press these seams open after trimming the seam allowance.
Once you get your units made, I recommend double checking their size and trimming up anything that is a little wonky. I know this may feel tedious, but it is definitely worth the effort!
I also recommend pressing with a wool mat and using a clapper to help set those seams. We're PRESSING -lifting and pressing the iron onto the seam - version IRONING by pushing against the seam with the edge of the iron plate. If you are a starch-er, this is a great project to use that too. ;)
Get all those units made and then it is time to sew them together. Follow the directions and diagrams in the pattern. Since this patttern has a striped background effect, it is really important to pay attention to the diagrams.
The combination of the Dotty Thatched Blizzard (white) and Cream is subtle and a little hard to photograph, but really lovely in person.
You'll make a few sections as directed and then join those together to complete the top.
I haven't decided how to quilt this version yet... but leaning toward free motion again.
But here is some detail of the quilting I did on my original version. I used my free motion foot and coordinating Aurifil 50 wt threads to play around a bit in the petals, leaves, and background.
I have included a couple of mock ups in other new collections arriving in shops soon from Moda: Sally's Stitches by Betsy Chutchian and Wheatland by Kansas Troubles. Which one is your favorite? If your local shop is carrying one of these collections, ask them to kit one up for you or help you select prints from another collection that catches your eye!
Next month, we will be making the Fairfield Table Runner. I will meet you back here on September 18th! While shown in a patriotic collection, its great for Halloween and Christmas, too!
